Groomed at a young age to hone his intelligence, abilities, emotional control, and just about anything that'd lead to him being a politician to be reckoned with, his education brought him from war tactics to government workings to land development to fae psychology. With top marks and good behaviour, it was no surprise that he went on to fight in the great war that eventually led to the Unseelie Court's creation, serving as a young lieutenant colonel in his first ever practical application of schooling. But despite his top marks and how well he did with the books, the reality was that none of this interested Rayla particularly; even the war was something he went into only because he was expected to, and not because he felt any particular need to fight for what he believed was right. The only good thing that came out of that war was meeting a lifelong friend of his -- a prisoner, technically, and a violent one that Rayla had been stabbed by more than once, but after winning him over with treats and food, the rest of it was easy. Said prisoner lived the simplest life Rayla could ever imagine and had the simplest motivations to go along with it; he took what he wanted when he wanted, and to an incredibly obedient child like Rayla, that was the bravest thing he'd ever heard in his life. When the war ended, his bond with the prisoner -- Erik -- remained, odd as it was, and Rayla laughed long and hard and loud when he found out Erik had gone and switched sides as if it was nothing. As if, to him, sides didn't matter. And duty didn't matter. And expectations didn't matter, if they went against what you wanted to do. And maybe they didn't matter, a fact Rayla begun to believe more and more when peacetime resumed and he was back to doing the things that his parents believed suited him best. Studying humanity and their relationship with fae kind; studying how fae land was being destroyed by the mortal and how best to retaliate; studying the Unseelie Court and predicting their next moves... there was too much studying and none of it for what Rayla truly wanted to learn: about insects, about animals, about the people that roamed the earth. In his dismal existence the most interesting individual he knew was Erik, and so it seemed only fitting that it was with Erik's help (that is, emotional support, even if it came out somewhat crass and definitely with more violence suggested than was necessary) that Rayla finally decided to run away and live his own life. In fact, Erik had even decided to live there with him. So he'd cut his branch of the family tree, leaving Europe and going towards the recently discovered Americas, and he'd planted it in the soil and tended to it, letting it grow. As the tree flourished, so too did Rayla's powers and physical health, which were strong so long as the tree decided to stay strong -- and stronger even than when he was in Europe, since he didn't have to share its magic with anyone else. America was a new start for him, and he passed the time doing many different things whilst posing as many different mortals, starting out as a scientist studying the natural world, and then drifting to psychology, and then to sociology. And when he studied all he thought he could study, he became obsessed with theatre. Where else could one learn the depths and aspirations of mortals if not through works written by them? The art forms that humans partook in fascinated Rayla above all else, and he found his good looks apparently helped in this venture a little more than his smarts did. A lot of rejections and small time parts later, he found his first big break in a production of Billy Elliot, playing the eponymous protagonist's father. Time passed, more roles came, and now Rayla's main passion is performing musicals -- and, well, any other acting projects he can get his hands on that capture his interest, but he'll admit that nothing feels better than singing and dancing on stage. Besides this attempt to enter the creative cars of the fame train, Rayla also spends time doing environmentalist work, both for flora and fauna. Of course, none is more important than the tree he tends to on the front yard of his home. ooc |
